The Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be forced to reconsider a peace plan agreed with Myanmar if the country's military rulers conduct more executions of prisoners, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen says. Key points: The chair of the 10-bloc group condemned the recent execution of four democracy activists by the junta Mr Hun Sen says the current situation had "changed dramatically" and could be seen as even worse than before because of the executions He says ASEAN's unity has been challenged by the political and security implications of the crisis in Myanmar The 10-nation bloc had been pushing for Myanmar to adhere to a five-point peace "consensus" it agreed to last year and has condemned the recent execution of four democracy activists by the junta . "If more prisoners are executed, we will be forced to rethink... our role vis-a-vis ASEAN's five-point consensus," said Mr Hun Sen, who is the current chair of ASEAN and was speaking at the … [Read more...] about ASEAN to rethink peace plan if Myanmar executes more prisoners, says chair

Image: Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan on the KBC set Sukanya Verma in Mumbai Sukanya Verma feels that special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati with Shah Rukh Khan was a terrific one. C asting coups aren't limited to movies alone. Television also understands the importance of throwing two heavyweights in the same frame. And so it's a mighty moment for the idiot box when Kaun Banega Crorepati 's ongoing and one-time hosts get together to play a game of Q&A. While Amitabh Bachchan has essayed the quiz master for four impressive runs, Shah Rukh Khan tested his star power as the serviceable if not spectacular anchor of the show in its third season. According to some reports, Khan's move didn't go down too well with the Big B. Over the period, things have been more than cordial between the two. Amit Aggarwal: Taking polymer to the loom

Crafted from recycled plastics and industrial materials, Amit Aggarwal’s floor-skimming dresses and lehengas at FDCI’s India Couture Week have a future as art. That, he admits post show, was the plan all along. His 66-piece collection, Pedesis, was seeded in pre-pandemic Bali, the lush Island of the Gods known for its basketry, batik and handcrafted jewellery. The Delhi-based designer had brought back two large portraits from that holiday, his “first point of stimuli”. “They are of this African tribal boy. Perhaps because I looked at them every day for the last two years I was subconsciously drawn towards the influence of tribal culture, which came through in this collection, with the colour, body adornments, and the ambiguity of form,” he says. Aggarwal’s bugle-bead moulded octopus on hand-cut recycled plastic ‘Something new with a story’ Aggarwal, 42, spent the early months of the pandemic sketching, tracking parrots from his window and finding comfort in everyday chores … [Read more...] about Amit Aggarwal: Taking polymer to the loom

Embassy intact, India ups Kabul work

August 6, 2022 by www.thehindu.com Leave a Comment

The newly reopened Indian Embassy in Kabul is expected to increase its operations in Afghanistan, with the “technical team” posted there in June focusing on business and trade opportunities and distribution of food and medical aid. This month, Afghanistan’s Ariana airlines will follow Kam Air, which has been operating weekly flights every Thursday between Kabul and Delhi since July, and begin a weekly service as well, confirmed officials, indicating that they expect more goods to be transported via the air cargo route. However, the embassy, which has 60 to 70 personnel so far, has not opened any visa facilitation services yet, and only a “limited number” of visas have been issued to Afghanistan citizens through the e-visa route, disappointing hundreds of students and patients requiring treatment in India. Sources told The Hindu that more than 60 personnel were now stationed at the embassy and residential compound. The group comprises five to seven officials, including a … [Read more...] about Embassy intact, India ups Kabul work

RAJESH Urging the Union Government to increase the number of working days in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme from the existing 150 days to 200 days a year and the day’s wages to ₹ 600, the CITU activists staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. Led by district secretary of Tamil Nadu Vivasaayigal Sangam P. Mayakrishnan, the protestors raised slogans to highlight their prime demand of upwardly revising the number of working days a year from 150 days to 200 days as giving employment to the rural poor less than 50% of every calendar year was not sufficient for them to feed their families thrice a day. Moreover, the existing daily wages under the MNREGP should be revised from ₹ 225 to ₹ 600 a day as the unprecedented inflation and skyrocketing prices of essential commodities had hit hard the below poverty line families. Moreover, the MNREGP scheme … [Read more...] about CITU demands 200 working days, increased wages of ₹ 600 a day under MNREGP
