‘I was a ticking bomb’: Tim Winton reveals the book that nearly broke him

August 6, 2022 by www.abc.net.au Leave a Comment

Tim Winton recalls a recent moment when he led his elderly mother to the beach, to help her into the water. His mum had been a swim teacher as a younger woman, but was now too frail to swim on her own. As Winton and his wife held his mother in the ocean, they were both very aware that this was a scene that Winton had imagined, and committed to paper, more than 20 years earlier. In one of the most moving scenes of Winton's 1997 novel Blueback, the protagonist Abel cradles his ageing mum in the water that she loves. "We come from water," the mother whispers to her son. "If … [Read more...] about ‘I was a ticking bomb’: Tim Winton reveals the book that nearly broke him

Synopsis Panghal bettered his silver from the last edition as he out-punched European Championship silver medallist England's Kiaran MacDonald by a 5-0 verdict in the men's flyweight. Indian boxers Nitu Ghanghas won the women's 48kg Commonwealth Games title before Amit Panghal (men's 51kg) joined her on the top of the podium, here on Sunday. Panghal bettered his silver from the last edition as he out-punched European Championship silver medallist England's Kiaran MacDonald by a 5-0 verdict in the men's flyweight. Nitu, on the other hand, upstaged 2019 world championships bronze medallist Demie-Jade Resztan of England by a 5-0 unanimous verdict. Despite the height disadvantage, Asian Games gold medallist Panghal was the far better pugilist among the two. "It was the toughest round and was the turning point. I lost the first round and gave it all to produce the win and there was no looking back," Panghal told PTI. Asked about his strategy against his British … [Read more...] about CWG 2022: Boxers Amit Panghal, Nitu Ghanghas strike gold
