Australia needs seven wickets to win the first Test against West Indies, who must survive one more day, requiring a nominal 306 more runs to win at Perth Stadium. Another magnificent Marnus Labuschagne century helped Australia to 2-182 at lunch on day four — a lead of 497 runs — before declaring and starting its quest for 10 wickets to win. But the home side had to do it without skipper Pat Cummins, who was rested for the first session of the innings with a quad strain, but returned later in the day with hopes of bowling on day five. The captain's absence left Australia a bowler light early in its attack and West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul weathered the weakened storm, putting on 116 for the first wicket. Brathwaite made his way to a fighting, brilliant century on day four, but Chanderpaul eventually fell to an around-the-wicket plan of attack from left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc, chopping on for 45, falling just short of dual … [Read more...] about Another Marnus masterclass gives Australia great chance of winning first Test heading into day five
If you are invited to write an essay on the current economic situation in India, what would be your top two subjects? Most people would pick the people’s top concerns: unemployment and inflation. The Ministry of Finance (MoF) publishes a Monthly Economic Review. I did not think that a bunch of six young and enthusiastic economists, asked by the MoF to write such an essay for the Review, would consciously avoid the word unemployment as well as words such as malnutrition, hunger and poverty. (I wonder if it was whispered in their ears that the Prime Minister may read the article). The group of economists knows but will not admit that the omission of unemployment, malnutrition, hunger and poverty is a grave dereliction of scholarly duty. Also by P Chidambaram | Hijab: Point and Counter point Why a Review? The Monthly Economic Review is a valuable document. I expected that the 2022 September Review (released on October 22, 2022) would give an objective mid-year … [Read more...] about P Chidambaram writes: Head buried in the sand
Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid made headlines in India on Monday (November 28) for criticising Vivek Agnhotri’s film The Kashmir Files , calling it “vulgar” and “propaganda”. Lapid, a jury chief at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), made the comments while addressing the closing ceremony of the festival in Goa. “There were 15 films in the international competition — the front window of the festival. Fourteen out of them had the cinematic qualities… and evoked vivid discussions. We were, all of us, disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files . That felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival,” he said. Lapid was the jury chairman of the International Competition section of IFFI. 'We will not fool ourselves by their under-performance in the last two games' IMAGE: Croatia drew with Tunisia in their opener but hit top form in a 4-1 defeat of Canada, leaving them in good shape going in to the clash at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. Rumours of Belgium's demise are greatly exaggerated, Croatia's head coach Zlatko Dalic said as he prepares his side for Thursday's decisive Group F showdown. Croatia, who beat Belgium in the 2018 semi-finals, need just a point to guarantee progress to the last 16 while FIFA second-ranked side Belgium almost certainly need to win. A shock 2-0 defeat by Morocco on Sunday was followed by talk of rifts in the Belgium camp, with playmaker Kevin de Bruyne and defender Jan Vertonghen reportedly at loggerheads. De Bruyne was also reported to have said that Belgium's so-called Golden Generation is now too old to win the World Cup, but Dalic was having none of it when asked on Wednesday. "We are playing against the second-best … [Read more...] about Croatia coach not fooled by Belgium’s woes
