RAJESH Urging the Union Government to increase the number of working days in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme from the existing 150 days to 200 days a year and the day’s wages to ₹ 600, the CITU activists staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. Led by district secretary of Tamil Nadu Vivasaayigal Sangam P. Mayakrishnan, the protestors raised slogans to highlight their prime demand of upwardly revising the number of working days a year from 150 days to 200 days as giving employment to the rural poor less than 50% of every calendar year was not sufficient for them to feed their families thrice a day. NCLAT dismisses NGO’s plea, upholds anti-trust regulator’s decision on WhatsApp

Synopsis In a judgment dated August 2, the NCLAT said there was no reason for it to doubt the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI’s) 2017 order. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal ( NCLAT ) has dismissed an appeal by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) against a decision by India’s anti-trust regulator that instant messaging platform WhatsApp had not been abusing its dominant position in the country. In a judgment dated August 2, the NCLAT said there was no reason for it to doubt the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI’s) 2017 order. Fight for Transparency Society, the NGO had complained to the CCI in 2017 saying that the Meta-owned platform’s privacy policy update of 2016 would force users to share their data with social media platform Facebook and its other group companies. Objection to renovation of Ashe memorial

Members of Hindu Munnani protested here on Thursday against the corporation’s decision to renovate the memorial of British Collector Robert Ashe, who was assassinated by freedom fighter Vanchinathan. After garlanding the statue of V.O. Chidambaram on the old corporation building premises, the protesters, led by V.P. Jayakumar, vice-president of Hindu Munnani, took out a padayatra to the corporation office to submit a petition objecting the ongoing renovation of Ashe memorial. The police, who stopped the Hindu Munnani activists, provided a vehicle to them to go to the corporation office to submit a petition to Commissioner T. Charusree. VCK seeks permission to hold Manjolai memorial event

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has filed a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking permission to conduct a public meeting commemorating the Manjolai tea estate workers’ deaths in Tirunelveli. The petitioner, N. Beemarao, VCK’s Ambasamudram union secretary, said on July 23, 1999, a large number of workers from the tea estates of Manjolai congregated in Tirunelveli and marched towards the Collectorate demanding the release of those workers who were arrested earlier for staging a protest seeking better pay. The workers who were being paid ₹70 demanded ₹100 and sought better working and living conditions. Mr. Beemarao said during the demonstration the police personnel assaulted the protesters, forcing them to run towards Tamirabharani river. Many of them jumped into the river and drowned.
