As water level in Vaigai dam crossed the 66-foot mark, Public Works Department officials issued the first flood warning along the river at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Theni district has been receiving sharp showers over the last one week and major parts along the Western Ghats have also been experiencing good rains. As a result, water inflow into the dams, including Manjalar dam and Sothuparai dam, has been rising steadily. As the there was a heavy flow in Kumbakarai waterfalls, a famous tourist spot in the district, Forest Department officials had banned bathing there as a precautionary measure, Forester David Raj said. Residents in parts of Wagga Wagga ordered to evacuate as floodwaters rise
Residents in parts of Wagga Wagga in the New South Wales Riverina have been ordered to evacuate as floodwaters rise. The State Emergency Service has told people in and around low-lying areas to leave before 6pm on Sunday evening, August 7. The areas include: • Edward Street West The SES says once flood waters reach 8.7 metres at the Wagga gauge, roads will be cut and access to water and sewerage may be lost. SES deputy southern zone commander Barry Griffiths said the order had been issued because of concerns roads would be cut off, rather than houses being inundated. He said about 120 residents were affected by the order. "Essentially this one's been done on the public safety issue," he said. "Properties should be OK at these levels but there are some areas of the North Wagga area, north of the Murrumbidgee River, that do experience quite rapid water moving through which is dangerous to motorists. New Delhi: After announcing former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu as the Presidential candidate for NDA, the centre has provided her round-the-clock Z+ category security cover by the armed Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) starting today. The armed squad took over the security of Murmu, 64, early Wednesday morning, according to a PTI report. Congratulatory messages from leaders flooded for Murmu after the announcement by Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “I am surprised as well as delighted. Officials on alert with discharge of floodwaters into Bhairavanitippa
With the continuous discharge of floodwaters from upland Karnataka into the Bhairavanitippa (BT) project in Gummagutta mandal, 35 km from Kalyandurg, in Anantapur district, the irrigation department officials are closely monitoring the inflows to release the surplus waters downstream into Vedavathi river. According to information, after a gap of five years, the BT project, with a storage capacity of 1 TMC, has been receiving 2,300 cusecs daily for a week. While the project FRL level is 1,655 feet, the floodwaters have taken the scale to 1,650 feet. The officials say the last such development was in October 2017. The irrigation officials, in coordination with the revenue and police departments, have sounded an alert in the villages on the banks of Vedavathi, cautioning the public not to move closer to the streams. The officials said that in case of emergency, the project’s gates would be lifted in a couple of days. THOOTHUKUDI A group of residents from Kaayalpattinam submitted a petition to the Collector on Monday urging him to initiate steps for desilting all drainage channels in the town near Tiruchendur to ensure proper draining of rainwater during the monsoon. In a petition submitted to Collector K. Senthil Raj, residents of Kaayalpattinam, who experienced heavy rain during the northeast monsoon and flooding last year, said the failure of Kaayalpattinam Municipality in desilting the drainage channels left the residents stranded in flood. “After a petition was submitted to the Collector last month, the Municipal Commissioner has given false information that all drainage channels in Kaayalpattinam had been desilted to drain stagnant rainwater into the sea. Since the drainage channels of Kaayalpattinam are yet to be desilted, the work should be completed properly at the earliest,” said M.N. Ahmed, one of the signatories of the petition.
