Candidates fail to publicise their criminal records – Times of India
Representative Image PANAJI: None of the candidates having criminal records in Goa has published advertisements in major newspapers informing voters about involvement in serious criminal cases, the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) said. In September 2018, a constitution bench of the Supreme Court headed by then chief justice Dipak Misra , had directed that election candidates, after filing their nominations, should repeatedly make declarations in print and electronic media at the constituency level about any criminal antecedents. In a letter to the chief electoral officer for Goa, Kunal, the ADR has stated that candidates with criminal antecedents have failed to comply with the guidelines set by the SC and the Election Commission of India ( ECI ). “This is just to draw your attention to the issue of non-compliance by candidates with criminal antecedents contesting elections to two Lok Sabha Seats and three seats for assembly byelections,” said Goa state … [Read more...] about Candidates fail to publicise their criminal records – Times of India

Synopsis The Supreme Court on Wednesday said irrational freebies offered to induce voters during elections would not be effectively debated in the Parliament, since no political party would like to take away freebies. The Supreme Court on Wednesday said freebies given to voters during elections would not be debated in the Parliament as no party would like to take away the sops. Terming it a serious issue, the top court also recommended to set up an expert body to find a solution to the problem. Emphasising that freebies were leading to an "economic disaster" and distorting voters' decision making , Solicitor General Tushar Mehta supported doing away with the practice of promising freebies to voters. He also said the Election Commission should look into the matter. The EC's counsel, however, said that its hands were tied due to a judgment of the top court on freebies. Chief Justice N.V. Who will bell revadi cat? EC to Niti, Finance to RBI, why hands tied
WHO will bell the cat? This is the question and the refrain in the highest echelons of the bureaucracy as it looks at dire state economic data and plans on how to respond to the Supreme Court’s prod for suggestions in the wake of the Prime Minister’s flagging the politics of freebies (revadi) . The Indian Express spoke to key officials in the Union Ministry of Finance; state Finance Ministers; Election Commission of India, Fifteenth Finance Commission, Niti Aayog, the Reserve Bank of India, and the Comptroller and Auditor General and found a consensus on three key issues. One, both the Centre and the states have been liberal with handouts — support to poor by a state is called a freebie by Centre, and vice versa. Two, existing laws and mandates do not allow ECI, CAG, Niti Aayog, and the Finance Commission to step in. Senior citizens with voter slips sent back home – Times of India
picture used for representational purpose PANAJI: There was much inconvenience experienced by many senior citizens across the state after they showed up at polling stations with much effort, but were sent back home as they carried only the photo voter’s slip, sans any identity proof as specified by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Senior citizens were left confused since ECI had allowed photo voter slips as a document for identification in the past. ECI, in February, informed all chief electoral officers that the photo voter slip shall not be accepted as a standalone identification document and had stated that voters are required to carry their electoral photo identity card (EPIC) or one of the 11 alternative documents specified for voting. Tuesday’s incidents indicate that the guidelines didn’t percolate down to the people.
