Starting Thursday, the government has introduced paperless entry at select airports to make air travel hassle-free. Under this initiative, airports will use a facial recognition software called ‘DigiYatra’ for entry. This means, passengers won’t need to carry their ID card and boarding pass. In the first phase, the initiative will be launched at seven airports, starting with three — Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi, followed by four airports namely Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Vijayawada by March 2023. Subsequently, the technology will be implemented across the country. Synopsis Audit places India above developed aviation markets like China, Denmark, will help overseas expansion of Indian carriers. In a significant boost for India ’s air safety, the UN aviation watchdog International Civil Aviation Organisation ( ICAO ) has upgraded India’s score in aviation safety. This comes following an audit by the watchdog last month. The audit, Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme, seeks to identify if countries have effectively and consistently implemented practices in aviation safety. India’s effective implementation score is now at 85.49 % as compared to 72.93 when it was last audited in 2018. The score ranks India above multiple OECD countries including China, Poland, Denmark. A high score will make it easier for Indian airlines to expand services into international sectors as permissions granted will be faster and airlines will be able to forge commercial arrangements more swiftly. When the Indian women’s hockey team came fourth at the Olympics, we still celebrated them on their amazing rollercoaster ride. At the end of the day, in sport, these are the sort of fighters we want to watch. That’s why when I think of where Indian sport should be at 100, in 2047, I don’t want to put a dull number to the medals we ought to win. Sport should be about standout memories. In 2047, I want to see firebrand Indian athletes, like the women’s hockey team, make headlines. I want every Indian athlete to make the finals and put themselves in a position to stand tall on the biggest stages. When we started shooting 25 years ago, we had nothing, but then each of us from that generation decided to give back through coaching and setting up academies. Back then, we were only riding our talent. We made winning four Olympic medals look easy. After two Olympic Games with no medals, we now want our shooters to be far better prepared. We are not the US or China or Russia — we are … [Read more...] about My dream for India at 100: A chance at excellence for every athlete
The Tata Group is set to commence the process of consolidating its entire airline business under a single umbrella — the Air India brand. At present, the Tata Group owns four airlines — Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express, plus a majority ownership in Vistara and AirAsia India. Tata won a bid to own 100 per cent in Air India by paying Rs 18,000 crore — a substantial part was used for clearing the airline’s debt and Rs 2,700 crore was paid to the Union government in October last year. AL RAYYAN: At a suburban park near Doha, the capital city of Qatar , cool air from vents in the ground blasted joggers on a November day that reached almost 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). The small park with air-conditioned paths is an apt illustration of World Cup host Qatar's answers, so far, to the rising temperatures its people face. The wealthy Gulf Arab nation has been able to pay for extreme adaptive measures like this thanks to the natural gas it exports to the world. A small peninsula that juts out into the Persian Gulf, Qatar sits in a region that, outside the Arctic, is warming faster than anyplace else on earth. “It's already bad. And it's getting worse," said Jos Lelieveld, an atmospheric chemist at Germany's Max Planck Institute. Part of the reason is the warming waters of the Persian Gulf, a shallow, narrow sea that contributes to stifling humidity in Qatar during some months. “It's a pretty difficult environment. It's quite hostile,” said Without … [Read more...] about Energy-rich Qatar faces fast-rising climate risks at home – Times of India
